Dialogue with YB Dato' Ong Tee Keat

Dialogue with YB Dato' Ong Tee Keat

On the 3rd of March 2007, CUMaS was honoured to play host to Malaysia's Deputy Higher Minister of Education, YB Dato' Ong Tee Keat, who took the opportunity to visit Cambridge and hold a dialogue with Malaysian students studying here.

The Deputy Minister was accompanied by Selangor assemblyman YB Dato' Lee Hwa Beng and the president of the MCA Club UK. He began his visit by having lunch at the famous Cambridge restaurant Chez Gerard with CUMaS committee members past and present, followed by a short tour of some of Cambridge's most famous Colleges and landmarks. CUMaS members took this opportunity to show off their colleges to the Minister, beginning with St John's and its Tower, followed up with King's and a viewing of its Chapel, and ending with Clare, where Dato' Lee Hwa Beng offered to buy Clare College a brick to finish off its famously uncompleted bridge.

Then began the question-and-answer dialogue session at the Senior Parlour in Gonville & Caius College. The room was packed to capacity, and the Deputy Minister began by saying that he had no wish to waste our time like other politicians with a propaganda-filled speech, and immediately opened the floor to questions.

And questions came indeed, what with his audience comprising Cambridge students. They ranged from questions about government policy to Anwar Ibrahim's visit, and there were so many that the Minister ran out of time before he could field them all. He thanked the students for making the time to attend the event, and for taking such an interest in current affairs. The CUMaS committee saw the Minister's delegation off at West Road.

We would like to thank all the members involved in making this event the success that it was.

CUMaS Picnic 2007
CUMaS Picnic 2007

The postgrad-meet-undergrad picnic this year was held at Queens’ Greens, roughly 150 meters from Queens’ College’s porter’s lodge, at 1500 hours GMT on 22nd April 2007. Attendance was approximately 50-strong. There was sufficient food which comprised of assorted cookies, biscuits, crisps and sweets.

Games played were captain ball, cricket, football, Frisbee and chess. There was a good amount of communication and many undergraduates met some postgraduates and got to know them for the first time, and vice versa.

This activity was also a reasonable morale-booster as it provided a brief respite from days of exam preparation for the undergraduates and days of research for the postgraduates.

The event was well documented, with the presence of a photographer on site.

Dispersal was approximately 1830 hours and it is sensible to conclude that everyone went come contented with the day’s events.

OxBridge Games 2007
OxBridge Games 2007

The OxBridge games this year was held in Oxford and it was competed in a rather competitive, but nevertheless friendly manner. We eventually came out on top, after competing in 6 sports events – Basketball, Table Tennis, Football, Badminton, Squash and Netball. We won 3 events, lost 2, and drew 1.

The first event of the day was basketball, in which we won rather convincingly, 34-10. Badminton was played concurrently with basketball, in which we won the men’s singles, but we lost both the women’s singles and mixed doubles. We headed into the lunch break with the score being 1-1.

The next 3 events were table tennis, football and squash. In table tennis, we won the men’s singles, but although we had won the men’s singles in squash, we lost the women’s singles, which resulted in a draw for squash.

Football was played in the rain, but it did not dampen our spirits. The footballers showed great resilience and spirit to come back from 2-0 down at half time to 2-2, but were unfortunate to lose 3-2 by a last minute goal.

The deciding event was netball – an event that we had not won in years. The girls certainly made us proud by hanging on to the win (7-6), after they had led 7-2 at half time.

It was truly a tremendous effort put in by our sportspeople on the day, and hopefully we can retain the trophy next year!

Malaysian Food Feast 2007
Malaysian Food Feast 2007

Rojak, Laksa, Roti Canai and Satay. Where in Cambridge can you find such mouth watering food of good quality for a mere price of £4? Only one place- the annual Malaysian Food Feast!

Held at New Hall this year, we had about 200 people trooping up the hill on the cold winter night of the 10th of February with the sole intention of sampling some Malaysian food.

With the unique starter of ‘Yee Sang’ (translated as fresh fish), the event kicked off with a blast as everyone tossed the ingredients in an animated fashion. The night went on quite deliciously as the starter was followed by other mouth watering dishes like ‘Rojak’, ‘Roti Canai’ and Lamb Curry, ‘Satay’, ‘Laksa’ and Chicken rice. Red bean soup and Jelly were the perfect desserts to end the night on a high note for all who came and almost everybody left with a happy, albeit stuffed stomach.

This event would not have been a success were it not for all the encouragement and support that we received from our members.

As such, many thanks has to be given to all the servers and helpers who helped in every way, be it big or small to make this event a success, not forgetting, of course our event sponsor, Accenture whose generosity made this event possible in the first place.

Back-to-School Formal

Back-to-School Formal

The Back-to-School formal was held at Robinson College following a long 6 week winter break. It gave everyone a chance to meet up after being away for so long, and also to smooth the transition of doing nothing during the holidays to the rigorous workload that Cambridge provides.

The food was good, with a unique main course - Turkey meat balls. It provided everyone with a pleasant surprise.

It was a good formal after all with many, although unhappy to have to face the long term ahead of them, were more than happy to see all their friends again.
